The Santa Cruz Recycling Alliance, (SCRAP), is a for profit division of the California Grey Bears. SCRAP has two trucks that collect clean source separated cardboard and stretch film from small to medium size businesses in the Santa Cruz County area. One of our rear load trucks is in the following picture.
What is SCRAP?

SCRAP, collects, bales and then sells the cardboard and the stretch film to processors for further recycling. When the customer separates the cardboard from other recyclables about 100% of that source separated cardboard is then recyclable. When other recyclables, like cans and bottles, are mixed with the cardboard and stretch film only about 70% of the cardboard gets recycled.
Our SCRAP profit goes directly into funding the Brown Bag Program of the California Grey Bears. This program is currently supplementing about 3,400 seniors in the county. So when a business signs up with SCRAP they are keeping as much of the cardboard and stretch film out of the landfill and they are giving back to the community that their business is in by supplementing many needy seniors groceries every week.
A full 2 cubic yard bin will supplement between 43 seniors (cardboard selling price of $50 per ton) to 68 seniors (cardboard selling price of $200 per ton) every week for one full year when picked up once a week. The bigger the bin and/or more pick ups per week will feed even more seniors per week. So it is easy to see how much your business can help our seniors within the county.

The contaminated cardboard is put into our landfill at Buena Vista. Our goal is to keep as much out of our landfill as is possible. To source separate is a guaranteed way to keep as much out of the landfill as is possible.
After the routes the trucks unload the cardboard on the processing apron. The cardboard is then baled as shown in the pictures below.
